How do some airlines manage to sell such low fares?
Here's a few answers:
- Higher seat density - one estimate is around 148 seats to 128 seats on a regular airline.
- Fast turnaround - the planes are serviced and turned around more quickly than on regular airlines - this can mean lower waiting costs for the plane. You may even be asked to clean up your seat and remove any rubbish to facilitate turnaround.
- Direct flights - they fly mostly short routes point to point.
- Airport facilities are frequently smaller, cheaper and sometimes a distance from other airports
- Tickets sold on the internet - no commissions paid
- No frills - no in-seat entertainment, no free food or drink (apart from tap water), no creature comforts
- Only one type of aircraft.
- Many staff on lower wages than on regular airlines.
Suggestions found on some websites for further savings include - selling standing room - and charging to use the toilets!
And so we come back to - you get what you pay for!

There is nothing more annoying than arriving at the airport with your carefully packed baggage only to find that you can't take it onboard, or that you have to discard valuable cosmetics or other items because they don't meet airline regulations. This can be a costly exercise. Regulations differ for international and domestic flights and it is wise to be sure you have the latest information before you leave home.
